Fibromyalgia / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

Thyroid Issues

According to (Rattray & Ludwig, 2005, p.981) Fibromyalgia (FM) is a painful non-articular rheumatic condition of at least 3 months duration, characterised by widespread muscular achiness and specifically the palpation of tender points at 11 of 18 prescribed locations on the body’. In addition (Werner, 2009, p.90) states ‘It is a complicated combination of a sleep problem, neuroendocrine imbalance and emotional state.’

Other symptoms include:

Stiffness especially in the mornings and evenings, weakness, poor sleep, restless leg syndrome, intolerance to cold, pins and needles or tingling in the extremities, poor memory and concentration.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is more commonly referred to as ME and is a condition that is distinguished by persistent fatigue that does not resolve with rest and severely reduces activity for many months.

Other symptoms include:

Fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, loss of appetite, intestinal problems (similar to IBS), memory loss, confusion, anxiety and depression. Also sensitivity to light and heat.

Individually or together they exhibit a collection of signs and symptoms that affect multiple systems within the body. They are conditions that vary massively is severity from limiting to completely debilitating. They can cause constant exhaustion to everyday life, no matter how much rest or sleep you have. They appear to occur in more women than men, and typically develop from your early 20’s to mid 40’s. Children can also develop CFS, this normally occurs between the age of 13 to 15.

The primary treatment for both fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome is a lifestyle choice to support your body as much as possible. Avoiding stress and stressful situations as much as possible helps, which is where massage can be a supportive lifestyle treatment to relieve symptoms.

Massage will stimulate circulation when exercise is not possible, it can also relieve muscle and joint pain whilst also improving sleep.
