IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

IBS is digestive system dysfunction, specifically the colon. IBS often goes hand in hand with stress and anxiety; IBS will flare up when people find themselves in stressful situations, such as job interviews, exams, divorce and other life changing situations. IBS is related to how each individual handles the stress; the majority of people have problems sleeping when they are in stressful situations. However, IBS patients find that they lose their ability to coordinate their bowel function.

IBS can become noticeable in numerous ways. Abdominal pain is a consistent symptom; this can be coupled with cramps, gas, bloating, constipation and/or diarrhea. Symptoms can also include a frequent need to have a bowel movement, however, a feeling of incomplete evacuation is often present.

Due to the nature of IBS massage can be extremely helpful for clients who suffer with this. Massage affects the nervous system and as such it can have a direct effect upon the anxiety and stress that causes the IBS; Additionally massage with aromatherapy oils can enhance relaxation even more. Some people find that massage direct to the abdominal area helps, as it will relax the muscles that create the cramping as well as the bloating feeling.
