Baby & Infant Massage

IAIM UK LogoBaby massage is a longstanding parenting tradition in many cultures, including Indian and African, and was introduced to the western world during the last 30 years, gaining in popularity in the UK since the late 1990’s.

The IAIM states ‘Baby massage is when a parent or primary carer lovingly strokes or holds their baby. Using a high quality non-fragranced vegetable oil, soothing holds and rhythmic strokes are given on each area of baby’s body, following a sequence that has been developed over many years. The massage offers a wonderful experience and a special time to communicate both verbally and non-verbally with babies, so that they feel loved, valued and respected’.

The International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) is the only worldwide organisation dedicated solely to raising awareness of infant massage. The IAIM was founded by Vimala McClure in 1986 and became an internationally established organisation in 1992. The Association has representatives in over 50 countries worldwide including 30 active Chapters consisting of tens of thousands of trained infant massage instructors passionate about ensuring every baby receives nurturing touch as a fundamental birth right.

The UK Chapter has been running since 1997 and has trained over 11,000 Certified Infant Massage Instructors (CIMIs).

Sarah was proud to have been a Director and Treasurer of the UK Chapter for the period 2006 – 2010.

If you would like to learn more about the benefits of baby massage and how to find an instructor in your area you can contact Sarah or visit the IAIM UK Chapter website.
